Talk It Out:
School’s Out -- Now What do We do?

"During this school year, I began working at home during the hours that my kids are at school. Now that summer vacation is just weeks ago, I am concerned about how I will be able to continue working -- at least in some capacity -- while they are there all day. I’d like to hear how other readers who work at home handle this challenge." ~ Jan

"Summer brings many blessings, but it can be a challenge if you work at home. I am a fulltime writer, and mostly work on the computer when my kids are at school. During the weekend, vacations and the summer months, it is a constant struggle over who gets to use the computer.

I've come up with some solutions.

1. I go on the computer during the early morning hours when my kids are still sleeping. Now that they are teenagers, I can usually count on having it until at least noon.

2. I stockpile articles during the school months, so I can take it easier during the summer.

3. I stick to a lighter schedule during June, July and August so I can take advantage of the weather and spending more time outdoors with the family.

4. I have learned to not be so hard on myself during the summer. Although I do stick to deadlines and stay on a less strict schedule with my writing, I won't beat myself up if I can't get to the computer every day, or go a week without submitting. This is sometimes the hardest thing to do, but the more I practice it, the easier it gets.

Learn to balance your work with enjoying your family, and you will succeed." ~ Shaunna
