Talk It Out:
Backing Up Your Hard Drive

""What do you do to ensure that the data on your hard drive is properly backed up? Among the backup methods you’ve tried, which have you found to be the most dependable?" ~ Editor

"I finally did join Mozy.com for my automatic back-up service!  First, they give you a free membership for a fixed amount a space. I utilized their free service about six months and limited my backup to the most important files (like accounting and family photos); then I just bit the bullet and joined full-service. For the cost (less than half of what my computer repair shop charges to attempt to recover my files when my computer invariable crashes) it was a great idea.  Wish I had done it sooner!" ~ Paula

"We subscribe to an online backup service called Carbonite.  It is $50 a year, which might not be cheap (I don't really know). To me it is worth it for all the pictures I have stored on it, etc.  That is what insurance is... paying for something you hope you never have to use!" ~ Julie

"We use the portable USB drives. You can get them at a relatively low cost and they can hold several gigabytes of information. Our local hospice also uses this method of backing up their files." ~ Anonymous

"I use two flash drives for backup and storage; one for personal use (4mb) and one for work (1mb). I work from home and backup once a week. I also keep emails stored on the hotmail site, not my hard drive. I have had a hard drive crash, and it wasn't fun, especially when I had to have my supervisor resend me several years' worth of emails that we have to keep for reference! These methods are inexpensive and have worked well so far. I haven't tried any on-line pay-for backup sites." ~ Carolyn

"I’ve tried a number of online backup services including some 'free' ones. The free ones are generally worth what you pay for them! We have a directory called 'data' on our hard drive. Every program saves its data files to that directory. Every day at 4:00 a.m. the backup program looks for changed files in that directory and uploads them to the server. The best one I’ve found so far is QuickBooks Online Backup. It has 10GB of online storage and costs $149 annually." ~ Maynard
