CTC Readers' Poll:
Rejuvenating Your Prayer Life

In the July 1, 2009 issue of the newsletter, Counting the Cost editor Nancy Twigg asked readers this question:

“What do you do to breathe life into your prayer life when it becomes too routine? How do you regain a passion for prayer when your spiritual fire has become a fading ember?”

Responses:

"There are times when prayer does become dull and loses it's power and that is usually because we have allowed our relationship with God to become routine as well. I find it's helpful to treat this relationship like any other: put in extra time and talk about everything. And be sure to do these things: praise Him, thank Him and then share with Him what is on your heart and ask for His guidance and wisdom (this shows our respect).

I know many people prefer to set aside time for prayer daily with a prayer list, but I find a 'running conversation' with God covers more subjects than one session daily. I often don't think of situations or people while I am in a prayer time but will think of them as the day goes on. It's often these times, outside of prayer when I do my most heartfelt praying.

I think my husband gave me the very best advice long ago: 'Talk to Him like you would your Dad.' Well I didn't have a dad to base that relationship upon, but I watched my husband and how he talked to his dad and learned. It's led to a wonderful feeling of relationship with God." ~ Terri

"When I need a boost I go to this song of praise on YouTube ('Here I am to Worship'):

Never fails to fire me up. I also sometimes tune into EWTN Global Catholic Network.  Their many shows on prayer lift me up as well." ~ Rose

"When I have trouble praying, I just keep praying. I'm old enough to know my prayer life will cycle back around and I believe God hears me even when I think my prayers are hitting the ceiling and bouncing back. I love Romans 8:26 that says the Holy Spirit knows the groanings of our hearts that words cannot express. You don't have to stress about prayer!" ~ Cindy in Georgia

"Having a prayer journal has been a help to me at different times in my life. Just simply writing down prayer concerns and then when they were answered and how is an amazing record. God often answers our prayers in ways we were not expecting – better than we could have imagined! It is inspiring to visually see a written record of God’s work in my family’s life.  ~ Jen

"I highly recommend the book 'Prayer' by Philip Yancey. I found it inspirational, while still being approachable and easy to relate to. He doesn't come across as a spiritual giant or even a prayer warrior, and yet makes the reader want to pray more and more and experience God's power in that way." ~ Pam
