CTC Readers' Poll:
Life's Simple Pleasures

In the February 1, 2008 issue of the newsletter, Counting the Cost editor
Nancy Twigg asked readers this question:

"What are the little indulgences in life that bring you the greatest amount of pleasure? What inexpensive pleasures do you enjoy the most?"

Responses:

"My one indulgence a day is a great cup of flavored coffee. We have a wonderful shop in town that freshly grinds coffee and I can get some wonderful flavors like Snickerdoodle, Cookies and Cream, Chocolate Mint, etc. This is how I start my day with a big cup of java and doing my Bible reading/prayer time before the kids get up." ~ Sherry

"I like to wake up an hour before my girls and from spring thru fall, I make my breakfast and sit on my front porch and watch the sunrise and my little town  wake up and start the day.  It calms me and grounds me for the rest of the day ahead." ~ Lisa C.

"I have to say I LOVE sitting on the back porch when the weather permits and having morning coffee. Even if it's a little cool, I'll wrap up in a warm robe and snuggle into my swing... gently swaying, watching the birds come to life and enjoying God's creation. What a blessing it is - and even more special when hubby has the time to join me." ~ Darlene

"Getting my 3 kids ready for bed each night means I don't get to watch TV until they are all asleep. I've gotten hooked on 'Celebrity Apprentice,' but never get to see it in eal time. I don't have TIVO, but I discovered that I can watch full episodes of the show on the Internet.  On the mornings the kids are in preschool, I usually run errands or clean the house. But, once a week, I relax in front of the computer for an hour and catch up on Apprentice with no interruptions." ~ Kathy

"One of my simplest pleasures is getting up early in the morning when the house is quiet and sitting in the corner of my den, where my chair is, and doing my devotions in the quiet with the woodstove burning. It is very cozy and warm. This is my time and I really enjoy this way of getting alone with God." ~ Juanita

"I don't always have time to indulge myself, but when I only have 15 minutes, I love a good quick game of Sudoku. When I have 30 minutes (say, over tea or coffee in the morning), I write a nice letter to an older family member (which also sets a good example for my homeschooled children!).  I have also learned that not speaking (at all) for 30 minutes in the morning somehow makes my day go a little more smoothly." ~ Melissa

"Here are a couple. I have some flavored teas in my stash, and add a bag occasionally to the regular morning pot. It adds a nice bit of something. Now that the kids are older I have the leisure to soak in a hot bathtub without interruption." ~ Anonymous

"Once every couple of weeks I steal an hour from a busy schedule , grab a cup of coffee at Barnes and Noble bookstore, pick out some favorite magazines and sit in a comfy chair and read like I have nothing else in the world to do. Ha! Sometimes I purchase one or two but sometimes I just walk out the door with what's left of my coffee. It's very relaxing." ~ Debby from Ohio

"My indulgences are sipping coffee, a hot bath, a good book and a quiet place to read it (some days it might be in the bath), and knitting or walking with friends." ~ Ellen

"I enjoy a soak in a hot tub at the end of a long day." ~ Maureen

"My indulgence is coffee:  I buy whole bean premium coffee from our local Dunn Brothers coffee shop and grind a small amount at a time.  Each morning, I make one cup of really good coffee and savor it." ~ Glenda

"I have an odd hobby. I love reading and collecting clippings from magazines on things that interest me: gardening, cooking, health, decorating, and odds & ends. But I rarely buy any magazines new. At garage sale and rummage sales, I can usually pick them up for 25 cents each or less,  more often 10 cents, and occasionally free. So I have piles of old magazines that I go thru at my leisure, tearing pages out for my files.  I feel so rich, with this treasury of information at my fingertips -- in my files, ready to be used, and in the magazines, waiting to be discovered." ~ Ellen

"My favorite indulgence is giving myself the gift of time to do something that I really enjoy doing like reading for pleasure. I have returned to college so there is a LOT on my required reading list. Giving myself permission to read a good book of my own choosing is rewarding and frugal since I usually check out books from the library. Another favorite indulgence is going to see a movie (usually at the dollar theatre) all by myself!" ~ Christy in Alabama
