"Of all the things your family does each holiday season, which traditions are most meaningful? Which activities add the most value to your Christmas celebration?" |

"Christmas Day is
also my birthday, and it used to bother me that I never
got to eat out on my birthday since virtually every
restaurant is closed. However, once we realized that
IHOP is open, we started going there for brunch after
waking and opening gifts. A few years ago, we started
inviting our fellow childless friends to join us, and it's
become a Christmas morning tradition among our social
group. Anyone who is in town gathers with us at IHOP for a
time of food and fellowship. It's become a tradition
that we hope to keep for many, many years." ~ Anne

"Christmas is for my husband and myself as we do not have family close by. We have established some traditions that we enjoy as a couple. We like to decorate the outside of our home with just a simple string of lights. We do that right after Thanksgiving. We also like to enjoy other people's decorations on Christmas Eve usually after we have come home from a Christmas Eve service at our church. A tradition for us is to attend the annual presentation of Handel's Messiah. We enjoy receiving Christmas cards as it reminds us of friends, family and colleagues who bring back memories of former times. We like to make the display of our cards unique every year. This year I have placed them on a ledge with twinkle lights behind them. We enjoy cooking the Christmas dinner together and every year it is completely different! I always bake a mince pie for my husband as it is one of his favorites. Listening to our Christmas CDs is important and we try to take a night close to Christmas to just sit in front of the tree and reflect on our years together." ~ Janice "My husband, our three boys and I have a family tradition that we do on the 22nd of December each year. We live quite a way from any big towns, so we take that day to drive into town and look at the decorated homes with Christmas lights. While we're out, we find a dollar type store and let each of the boys pick three things that are just theirs. These are kind of a pre-Christmas present. It doesn't cost much and it keeps them busy until they get their 'real' gifts and they don't ask to open anything early. It also gives us a chance to spend time together as a family." ~ Sheri Editor's Note: Thanks to all these readers who took time to write! |
