"One book
that I feel is a must-read for any married couple
or parent, is 'The Five Love Languages' by Dr Gary
Chapman. The concept of a different love language
being spoken by different people is right on
target. This perspective changed my marriage after
10 years of struggling to feel loved by
my husband. To know someone loves you, and to feel
loved are two very different things. My husband
and I now both see each other more clearly and can
relate to one another in the right language.
I would give this book a 10 out of 10!" ~
Julie
"The Bible
is number 1.
Then 'A Lantern
In Her Hand' by Bess Aldrich
'Created To Be
His Helpmeet' by Debbie Pearl
'The
Irresistible Revolution' by Shane Claiborne
'The Debt'
( I cannot remember the author)" ~ Lori
"The book that had
the most influence on me is 'All Quiet on the Western
Front.' I read it in 9th grade and it made me see
the world from another's point of view. The book
is about World War I from the eyes of a German solider.
Throughout the book you feel such compassion and anguish
for him, but then you realize he is the enemy.
Very powerful effect. We are all in this world
together trying to do what is right." ~ Melora
"The most powerful book I've read lately is 'Captivating' by John & Stasi Eldredge. It really brought my relationship with God closer. It has been such a blessing! It delves pretty deep into what makes a woman tick and how God fulfills each longing of our hearts. I originally checked it out from the library, but bought a copy for myself and one day I'll share it with my daughter too." ~ Annie "I
just read (in about one hour) 'Fish! A Remarkable Way to
Boost Morale and Improve Results' by Stephen C. Lundin,
Harry Paul, and John Christensen. This book made me
think not only about how I handle my daily job but how I
look at life. I come from a negative family and it can
be a struggle not to become a toxic energy drain. I also
thought about the life and joy which Christ has given
me. Am I representing Him well with my daily attitude? I
have been challenged to choose my attitude, play, make
their day and be present. This book is not a
Christ-centered book but I think those four ideas are
how we saw Christ live. He knew He would be betrayed and
die on a cross, yet He chose to have an attitude of
service and love, people enjoyed being with him (I bet
he teased and had fun) and he was really there (present)
for them. I recommend this quick read to anyone who
would like a new look at the way attitude shapes our
world instead of our world shaping us. We are in a
'blame' society: 'My parents did this to me,' 'My boss
never recognized me,' 'The professor was unfair,' 'My
husband...my wife...my church... ' This book says your
can't change that but you can change the way your react
(I'll add...with the help of Christ!)." ~ Jennifer,
Indiana "I've renewed my acquaintance with the library and have found lots of old friends to enjoy once more. But the two books that have had the most impact on my life were 'Face to Face with God' by Bill Johnson and 'More than Enough' by Heidi and Roland Baker. 'Face to Face' is about coming into a closer relationship with God. I'm a fast reader, but I had to literally stop and take these book in bits and pieces, sometimes one paragraph at a time. I made lots of notes and plan to return to it to read again. It was just so filled with information and food for thought that I couldn't take it all in at one sitting. 'More Than Enough' is a partial account of Heidi Baker's missionary life in Africa. I had a difficult time reading this book without crying, without stopping to correct a spirit of judgment that came on me, without asking God again and again why I felt so challenged by the work Mrs. Baker is doing." ~ Terri in GA ""The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren The most basic questions everyone faces in life are 'Why am I here? What is my purpose?' Self-help books suggest that people should look within, at their own desires and dreams, but Rick Warren says the starting place must be with God and his eternal purposes for each life. Real meaning and significance comes from understanding and fulfilling God’s purposes for putting us on earth. This book helps readers understand God’s incredible plan for their lives. Warren enables them to see the big picture of what life is all about and begin to live the life God created them to live. A true life-altering book!" ~ Gail
"I
just finished Scream Free Parenting by Hal
Runkel (http://www.screamfree.com/index.php).
It gave me some great insight into the 'why' behind my
screaming. I was scream-free for about two
weeks, but then had a slip-up with my 5-year-old about
laundry in the floor. I knew even while I was
using my 'outside' voice that it was wrong.
After apologizing to him, we had some quiet time talking with
each other. The book really helped me realize how
my choices of responses affects the choices my
children make...it's a vicious cycle that is
controlled by ME." ~ Cassie
"I would like to recommend two books that really spoke to my heart: 'Not by Chance' by Layton Talbert - Excellent, excellent! If you've ever had any doubts about Who is in control of EVERYTHING, you need to read this book. Our Pastor's wife even did a study on this book last summer and it left permanent marks on my heart and life.
"Evidence Not
Seen' by Darlene Diebler Rose - It is an eye-opening
account of a missionary in World War II. God's
faithfulness to her is so inspirational. I've
bought this as a gift for so many.
I can't wait to see
what books others will recommend. I'm always
searching for good Christian books to read. Of
course, the Bible is my favorite!" ~ Mary
"The most
life changing books my husband and I have read: "I am reading 'Eat That Frog' by Brian Tracy. It's about not procrastinating and being more productive (in the workplace, specifically, but the principles apply to anything you need to accomplish) by eating your 'frog' first thing in the morning (the frog being a metaphor for whatever it is that you need to accomplish, but will have a tendency to put off). Very quick reading with short, few-page chapters. Perfect for list-makers (like me). Lays out step-by-step how to establish your plan of action." ~ Sherri "My book recommendation at the moment is 'How Could a Loving God? Powerful Answers on Suffering and Loss' by Ken Ham. It delivers answers biblically. After I read it I listened to 'He's in The Midst' by the Bishops." ~ Laurie "The Shack by William P. Young has made a profound impact on my life. This book will give you a perspective of how much God truly loves us. To give away the plot of the story would steal the joy of the book, but you will see things with a different reality after reading this book. It is a work of fiction, but the story is one that will stay with you for a lifetime." ~ Renee "I read Prince Charming Isn’t Coming: How Women Get Smart About Money, by Barbara Stanny about a month ago and it was wonderful. It was easy to read and very informative. I was in the process of moving my 401K from a job I no longer worked at to a traditional IRA. I wanted to know my options and just general information about finance. It was great! I was amazed at some of the simple things Barbara pointed out in her book. At dinner parties men will talk sports, business and finance. Women never talk about money to other women. It is almost a taboo. I tested this out on my own circle of friends and I was surprised to hear the same response when I brought up investments or retirement accounts: 'My husband handles that.' This is from working women. Women usually outlive their spouses by 15 years. We need to make sure our 'husband’s plan' takes this into consideration. More so we need to take charge of our finances now because the fact is most of us will outlive our spouses and we need to know where the investments are, what accounts we have and what debt we owe. I am continuing my self-education into the financial world and I am trying to pass along this information to my daughters as well. I highly recommend this book to women of all ages. As soon as you start earning an income, you should start a savings and a retirement account." ~ Theresa "Two books that have been life-changing for me are: 'Boundaries' by Cloud and Townsend and 'Created to Be His Helpmeet' by Debi Pearl. 'Boundaries' challenged me to examine where I overstep my boundaries and also where I allow others to overstep my boundaries. 'Created to be His Help Meet' challenged me to become (and continue to grow in becoming) a more godly wife, to honor my husband more deeply and to finally cut the apron strings to my parents." ~ Jen "My husband and I have read 'Financial Peace' by Dave Ramsey and it has totally changed our lives. We are now working on our debt snowball with plans to be free of consumer debt by Christmas. Being debt free will give us the ability for me to become a stay-at-home wife and mom!" ~ Christy
