Creatively Frugal
Indoor Fun

What does your family do for entertainment when the weather keeps everyone indoors?

"We set up a card table and put out a jigsaw puzzle." ~ J

"It is about 2° as I write this so we are right in the middle of our season of indoor frugal fun! One key to keeping our two boys (age 3 and 5) happy is to ration the fun: if they only use certain toys or games on certain days, the games and toys tend to hold their appeal longer during the winter months. For example, we have game night on Fridays and get out board games and popcorn then. We have one big drawer with a set of trains and some other toys which they can only use on the weekends. They have certain days for videos; on my cleaning day they can watch a short one and on Saturday a long one. We alternate Wednesdays with another family so we get indoor play at each other's house for a change of scenery. We have two days for baking and one day for library visits. We also make sure we do get out for a little while almost every day no matter what the weather to keep our spirits up. This may all sound very scheduled, but the boys are very clear on what there is to look forward to and this helps everyone a lot!" ~ BethAnne

"We love to play card games with our children ages 15-3, games such as Dutch Blitz, Uno and Go Travel." ~ Beverly

"Since we live in Alaska the weather has to be pretty bad to keep us in; otherwise we'd be inside all winter. Lots of times we play board games, starting with a game that even the youngest in our family can play. For example, our 1.5 year old played the new Operation Brain Surgery by picking pieces for her daddy. Then we advance a little and play something geared for the next youngest, and then the next. We home- school, so we try to pick games that are educational as well as the 'just for fun' games. We also have family reading time the same way; short stories for the younger ones first & then chapter books for the older ones."
