Creatively Frugal Sun Protection
Please share your favorite tips for saving on sunscreen and other forms
of protection from the sun.
"I usually buy generic sunscreen
(such as Walgreen's brand). I've also
noted that the Walgreen's Kids SPF 50
sunscreen has the exact ingredients as
the Walgreen's Adult SPF 50 sunscreen
but the Kids costs less than the
Adult. I watch for Buy 1, Get 1 Free
Sales and stock up.
I used to be a sun worshipper (either
sunbathed outdoors or in tanning
booths) in my teens in the 1980s when
tans were all the rage. I used either
baby oil or sunscreen with an SPF of
4. At that time, my skin was prone to
breakouts and I couldn't find oil-free
sunscreen at that time so I never wore
sunscreen on my face. I am now paying
the price with wrinkles and my skin
looks rough. My sister never sunbathed
like I did. She is wrinkle-free and
her skin is smooth (she's older than
me!). If I ever have children I will
definitely stress the importance of
sunscreen and the price you pay if you
do not use it. I am also very
worried I might get skin cancer
because of my previous careless
attitude towards sunscreen. Now
I never leave the house without
sunscreen, even during the winter."

"I
wear sunscreen year-round on my face.
I don't rely on the SPF in
moisturizers or foundation, but I find
that it's a lot cheaper in the off
season than it is during the peak
summer months. I've heard that you
can't store those items for too long,
so when it starts heating up, that's
when I buy sunscreen for the family!"

"I do like my
grandmother -- I wear long sleeves, a wide brimmed
hat, and long, loose skirts. If the clothes are
made of natural materials (cotton, linen) they are
cool, and I don't have to worry about what might
be harmful in the sunscreen ingredients, etc."
